New Guidelines for Italian Citizenship Applications

In 2025, the Italian government introduced new rules that reshape how Italian citizenship applications work.

While some of these changes bring stricter criteria, they also create new opportunities that many applicants may not be aware of.

Fast Track Italian Citizenship is a team of experienced professionals dedicated to guiding clients through every step of the process, starting with a free initial assessment to understand each individual case and identify the best path forward.

One of the key updates affects Italian citizenship by descent.  The new law introduces a generational limit of two generations, meaning applications are now limited to individuals with an Italian parent or grandparent. In addition, the Italian ancestor must have been exclusively an Italian citizen either at the time of their death or at the time of the applicant’s birth.

There is also an alternative path that may still allow eligibility. If the applicant’s parent lived in Italy for at least two consecutive years before the applicant’s birth and before acquiring another citizenship, the application will still be valid.

While these changes have reduced eligibility for some, many applicants are still surprised to discover they qualify under the updated rules. Since each situation is unique, a professional assessment can make all the difference.

At the same time, there is very good news. The Italian government has reopened the possibility for former Italian citizens to regain their citizenship through a simplified reacquisition process. This can now be done without the need to relocate to Italy, making it far more accessible than in the past. This opportunity will remain available until December 2027 and represents an important second chance for many families.

Another important update involves minor children. Children born abroad are no longer automatically granted Italian citizenship unless at least one parent was exclusively an Italian citizen at the time of birth. However, this does not mean the opportunity is lost. Many children can still be registered as Italian citizens through a legal benefit, as long as the parents apply within three years of the child’s birth.

There is also a generous grace period. Until May 2029, children who are older than three years can still be registered, provided they were minors before March 2025. This extended window offers families valuable time to take action and secure citizenship for their children.

It is worth noting that citizenship by marriage remains unchanged. Applicants must still meet the B1 Italian language requirement and demonstrate a clean criminal record. The process remains time-sensitive, so planning ahead is essential to avoid delays.

With years of experience supporting international clients, Fast Track Italian Citizenship offers a reliable and efficient way to navigate what can otherwise be a complex process. Their team focuses on making each application as smooth and stress-free as possible.
