Major Fast It Portal Update: Traditional Passwords to Be Permanently Blocked

Moving abroad or holding dual citizenship? Here is how Italy’s upcoming mandatory digital identity migration affects your AIRE status, and how to prepare before the deadline.

If you are an Italian citizen living abroad or have recently acquired Italian citizenship jure sanguinis (by descent), the Fast It portal is your lifeline. It is the official digital platform used to register with AIRE (Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all’Estero), update your foreign address, and manage essential consular services.

However, a massive security update is about to fundamentally change how you access your records.

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Farnesina) has confirmed that traditional login methods—using just a standard email address and password—are being phased out entirely. To prevent getting locked out of your account, you must transition to an official Italian secure digital identity.

Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming timeline and how to keep your portal active.

The Cutoff Date: March 31, 2027

While the Italian government originally intended for a swifter transition, the definitive cutoff date has been officially extended to March 31, 2027.

Important Security Warning: The moment you log into the Fast It portal using a digital identity for the first time, the system will automatically and permanently deactivate your old username and password credentials. You will not be able to revert to standard email logins.

After March 31, 2027, the only valid ways to access online consular services will be through one of Italy’s two secure digital authentication systems:

  1. SPID (Sistema Pubblico di Identità Digitale): A secure digital ID provider system.
  2. CIE (Carta d’Identità Elettronica): Italy’s biometric Electronic Identity Card.

New 2026 Rules Make Getting a Digital ID Easier From Abroad

In the past, dual citizens living outside of Europe found it incredibly difficult to secure an Italian identity card or activate a digital ID due to massive consular backlogs. Fortunately, recent legislation has introduced two major upgrades that make compliance much easier:

  • CIE Applications at ANY Italian Comune: A major procedural upgrade allows any citizen actively registered in AIRE to completely bypass consular wait times. You can now walk into any municipality (Comune) in Italy to apply for your Electronic ID Card while traveling or visiting family.
  • Paper ID Phase-Out: Old-school paper Italian identity cards are officially losing their legal validity. Anyone still holding a physical paper card is highly encouraged to upgrade to the digital CIE immediately.

How This Affects Your Citizenship Process

If your citizenship application is currently pending, or if you have recently received a favorable court judgment, this change directly impacts your next steps. Once your birth certificate is successfully registered by your ancestral Comune, your very next legal obligation is to register in AIRE via Fast It within 90 days.

Failing to secure a digital login method could tie up your ability to register your address, update vital statistics, or ultimately book your Italian passport appointment.
